Memoirs - Stories of the Living
I seem to have been drawn to many memoirs this year, all alive and ever inspiring. I have 5 books to recommend. Two for their wild lives as famous artists, and three for a peek into a different culture. All books have themes of perseverance, hard earned life lessons, courage, words to live by, and inspiration, all told in the first person. I listened to all of these except for the last one. The beauty of audiobooks is getting to “read” so many books while walking. So if you want more exercise and reading, get an audiobook and get walking! A good book and a beautiful walk may be one of the best parts of your day. It’s definitely a highlight of mine.
Non Fiction Favorites
Yes, I have strayed away from my paradoxical love of baking, offering book suggestions rather than recipes. But here’s an exercise tip! I listened to all of these as audio books while walking, so you don’t even have to sit around to read. I walk a lot, therefore I “read” a lot! You can get your exercise on and book in too! Although it still seems like a time to escape reality with fiction, these books stimulate and inspire. They make great gifts as well!
Body Books for Every BODY
I am delighted to recommend some books to delve into the depths of the body. We like that here at The Curious Mover! There is always so much to learn, with different philosophies and outlooks. These three books I have read offer just that. A scientific approach, a spiritual outlook, and a radical idea. All books pointing to loving the body you have, its miracles, its companionship, perfections, and imperfections.
New Year, New Month, New Habits!
New year, new month, new perspective on our lives. We make resolutions. But a lot of time, they don’t stick. Why?
Your Winter Reading List
The pandemic has made reading easier to do, with being less busy, so I wanted to recommend some favorites you can pick up for the holidays. Please share what good reads you have as well!
The Lost Art of Breathing
James Nestor’s book “Breath - The New Science of a Lost Art” was literally a breath of fresh air and as engaging as a page turning novel. Nestor is an investigative journalist who immerses himself in pulmonary tests, anthropology, history, and a variety of different breathing technique classes. He travels the world to write this book, taking us through creepy underground tunnels in France to study the sizes of skulls.
Caged Lion by John Howard Steel
A new book about Joseph Pilates has just been released, written by John Howard Steel. On a tip by both his Contrology loving parents, Steel was a young man when he walked into Pilates’ Contrology studio. Joe was already in his eighties. It is an apolitical, straightforward, witty, authentic, first person look into the man, his work, and how Contrology became what Pilates is today.
The Emotional Body Good Reads - 5
Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
The Emotional Body Good Reads - 4
This was one of my very first reads when I first became a teacher back in 1998. Bertherat also believes pain and tension can live in a body "unexamined". That vessel, a haunted house, needs to be awakened.
The Emotional Body Good Reads - 2
Dr. Sarno was in practice for almost 2 decades when he realized nothing he was prescribing for back pain was working. His developed his highly controversial theory of TMS, or Tension Myositis Syndrome - a psychosomatic condition that causes pain.
The Emotional Body Good Reads - 1
The body sure does! This was the most profound book I have read about trauma so far, and I just got started on my search. It gave me insight on how the physical body can become separated from the mind.
The Emotional Body Part 1
This blog will be spread over 4 weeks, each week highlighting a book or two that is so useful to understanding and exploring the emotional body.
Libby on your Electronic Devices
I love Libby!! Nope, I am not talking about a woman, it’s the app “Libby” from the Los Angeles Public Library (also known as Overdrive as well). It’s been a revelation that has revolutionized my reading habit.
