Word of the year: NOVEL

Merging Movement

Merging Movement

We hear the word novel so much right now. So the term novelty movement is a term I am starting to love. It means "new movement": movement that is new to your body. Movement you have perhaps never done before. Movement that might feel uncoordinated, ungraceful, and maybe even sloppy (for now). It requires practice and patience until the brain and body understands it. It leads to more strength, mobility, and stronger neural pathways in the brain.

These new videos should not intimidate, but challenge in the best way possible. It's working within multiple planes, using our own body weight and physics. It's a direction I want to move my teaching and can be done in your living rooms. I am available for guidance and encouragement to break down these videos if they are too fast or need modifications.

It's fun, joyful, and life affirming to move, and I want to be that bridge to lead you to a different movement experience. Let's still do Pilates and/or strength training. These modalities definitely have their value. Let's be finished with perfectionism in exercise and be open to new and authentic ways of moving. Let's mix up a predicted order, to something unpredictable. Repetition for strength, but not redundancy. Let's get out of our exercise comfort zones. Let’s be OK not getting it perfect right away, and relish in the unknown. To make it a journey, and not an immediate destination. Let's keep changing the demands on the body, so it can adapt to any movement situation. Now that seems like a novel way to workout! OK!!! Who is with me?
